Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When will you have puppies available?
We litters periodically throughout the year, but we like to make sure our little mamas get some rest, too.  As such, we don't have a fixed schedule for when our puppies will arrive.  If you want to be notified each time we have a new litter, sign up for our announcement group.

Do you take down payments?
No. We don't accept down payments or put puppies on hold. Full payment (plus shipping, if applicable) is required before puppies are released.

How will I know when new puppies are available?
If you want to be notified each time we have a new litter, sign up for our announcement group.

Do you ever ship puppies?
Yes. We ship coast to coast. Whenever possible, we will help arrange hand-delivery of your new puppy. We strongly prefer that our puppies not travel alone.

When we hand deliver, your puppy travels in the cabin of the plane in a soft-sided carrier. Your pet's human companion will provide hands-on attention the entire trip to minimize any stress that traveling may cause.

In the event that personal delivery is not a possibility, we will work with you to explore all other options. Feel free to call us if you have questions about other delivery options.

How much does it cost to ship a puppy?
We ask $300 for the personalized care your puppy will receive until they reach their destination and to help offset travel costs.

If you've requested special shipping or handling arrangements (beyond those we normally offer), we'll work with you to establish the cost before we finalize the sale.

How can I get pick of the litter?
We believe the fairest system for our customers is "first come, first served."
If you want the pick of the litter, be first to respond!

After that, we'll respond and set up appointments based on who contacted us first. We'll return personal phone calls, too (so long as you remember to leave us your contact information).

Are (Pugs, Puggles, Shih Tzus) good with (kids, cats, other dogs)?
Yes. How well a puppy gets along with other pets or children depends on how well they were socialized when they were young.  At Legacy Kennels, we give lots of personal attention to each puppy before it is sold. There is never a shortage of children around our home, as well as an assortment of other animals, so the puppies will have been well socialized (if not "pre-spoiled"!).

To learn more about each of our breeds, be sure to visit their specific pages: Pugs, Puggles, Shih-Chons, and Shih-Tzus.

Where are you located?
Legacy Kennels is located approximately one hour West of the
Minneapolis, Minnesota. Precise directions will be provided to facilitate puppy pick-up after a sale.

Do you ever have black puggles?
Yes, sometimes we do. Puggles come in a variety of shades, from quite light to quite dark. We occasionally do have pure black puggles, but they are very popular and often are the first to sell.

Why is it so long between litters?
Simply put, it's because we are a small kennel. Legacy Kennels is a small, family owned business.  We own and breed all our own dogs and sell only to good, individual homes--never to other breeders or pet shops. That's why we don't have puppies available year-round (besides, sometimes those little mamas need a rest, too!).

We'll continue to supply as many happy, healthy puppies as we can while still maintaining the quality, privacy, and personal touch of a small business.

If your search for a puppy coincides with one of our down times, we are sometimes able to direct customers to other reputable breeders.

Are Shih-Chons the same as (Shichons, Zuchons, Teddy Bear puppies, Fuzzy Wuzzys)?
Shih-Chons are a hybrid cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise.  They commonly are also referred to as Shichons, Zuchons, Teddy Bears, or Fuzzy Wuzzys (or any of a number of similar variants).  The real key is that they are a Shih Tzu-Bichon Frise hybrid.
