Some General Information About Shih-Chons
These adorable designer dogs
we call Shih-Chons also go by many other names: Shihchons, Zu-chons,
"Teddy Bear" puppies, "Fuzzy Wuzzys", and any number of variations of
those names. A hybrid cross of a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise,
they consistently display the best traits of both breeds. People
who have discovered the joy of knowing these remarkable little dogs
have become fans for life!
Our Shuch-Chon puppies are bred for their easygoing and agreeable temperment, and their incredably soft and cuddly coats.
As is true of most mixed-breed dogs, Shih-Chons are hardy and healthy, suffering from fewer health problems than either of the parent breeds. Their life expectancy is 14 to 17 years when given proper care. Bred with our small line of Shih Tzus, our Shih-Chons will be small dogs, generally staying under 10 pounds as adults. An endearing trait of Shih-Chons is that they tend to keep their puppyish cuteness even as adults.
The coat, which is low in dander, is almost completely hypoallergenic. It will benefit from regular brushing and bathing when necessary, to keep the coat healthy and clean. The hair, which grows continuously and does not shed, is usually kept in a "teddy bear" cut, two to four inches in length, with longer feathered ears. It typically takes on one of two types: the straighter, airy, soft, and silky variety, or the slightly curly, very soft, and plush type. Either type provides a pleasurable petting experience, unlike any other--as luxurious as the highest priced plush toys and teddy bears on the market.
Shich-Chons are vey intelligent, mild-mannered, and loving family companions. Spunky and alert, they get along with practically everyone and everything. Since they crave attention, Shih-Chons do not do as well when left alone for long periods of time.
This "Teddy Bear" hybrid was originally bred as a compantion for handicapped children, who needed a cuddly and squeezable dog that would happily put up with hours of snuggling without becoming irritated or nippy. Shih-Chons are also playful, energetic, easy to train, and seem to enjoy showing off the tricks they know. They can adapt to long outdoor walks and playtimes, but can easily be satisfied with indoor living as well. They are very responsible to facial expressions and body language, and love nothing ore than to spend time close to the people they love.
