Some General Information About Puggles

You've probably heard about Puggles on television, or somewhere in the news. This "designer dog" is very popular right now. We've seen them appear everywhere from Regis and Kelly to Good Morning America and The Today Show. If you've ever seen a puggle, you know how adorable and fun-loving they are, but there is more to them than just an adorable doggie face and a great personality.

Puggles are a relatively new hybrid dog breed produced by mating a select female Beagle to a select male Pug. The result is a very sweet-tempered, affectionate (but not yippy, hyper, or insecure) puppy that is very low-maintenance, family-friendly.  They're great with children and other dogs!

Well into their adult lives, Puggles exemplify the best of what dogs are all about--loyalty, companionship, and affection--translating into a breed that is very eager to please its owner. It has been proven that, over time, Puggle owners feel their Puggles change their own family chemistry for the better, giving everyone a "lift" by their happy, can-do natures. Puggles are durable, hardy dogs that will happily take a bit of rough-housing as well as lovingly settle in for long naps and snuggle sessions.

Due to their elongated snouts, breathing troubles are not a problem. Also, since their eyes do not bulge like those on Pugs, eye injuries among Puggles are much less common.Puggles do not show the Beagle tendency to howl or run.  Rather, their greatest delight seems to be to be in their owner's presence. This quality tends to keep your Puggle close to you.

As is typical for most hybrid breeds, Puggles display no congenital defects or particular health concerns. Like all straight-haired dog breeds, puggles do shed; however, their relatively short coat and small size minimizes this problem.

Adult Puggles tend to weigh between 14 and 20 pounds, with a 13-15" shoulder height. Puggles bred from a purebred Beagle crossed with a purebred Pug will consistantly retain the unique characteristics for which this breed is known.  They typically come in two varieties: black (less common) and fawn (golden-brown with black muzzle and ears).  Sometimes, they will also have white highlights, particularly on the toes and/or chest.

Some other Puggle characteristics are: a gracefully curving tail, charming dark "eyeliner", loose skin, and expresseive wrinkles on the head and face.  These characteristics make them a truly endearing little dog, both in looks and personality!
